Learning Management Systems

Wikipedia describes a Learning Management System (LMS) as 'a software application for the administration, documentation, tracking, and reporting of training programs, classroom and online events, e-learning programs, and training content'.
As a CQU student, I have had exposure to 2 different Learning Management Systems since I started last year - Blackboard and Moodle.
Blackboard is available to all Education Queensland teachers for use within their classrooms.  I can definately see the advantages of having a system such as this set up.  It would become a very easy way for student to keep up to date with their studies and have instant access to information regarding learning and assessment.  With so much going in the schools these days (VET courses, school based apprenticeships), it would be great for those students that may miss regular days to have the information available to them outside the normal hours of a classroom.
On the negative side, it would take a reasonable amount of time to set one of these applications up and having to do this for each class that you have may prove impossible.  Maybe it could be made easier by having them set up in departments rather than classes.  For example, a year 9 Mathematics Blackboard that is filled with tutorials, activities, assessment details, useful links and information.
I personally love the fact that I can access the required information at any time of day or night and really mould my studies to suit my lifestyle - maybe it's time we gave that same opportunity to the adolescents of today.
